Developing Physical Literacy in Youth Athletics with Northbrook Speed Skating Club NEW!

Northbrook Speedskating Club has been training and sending athletes to every Winter Olympics since 1952.  With particular emphasis on quality and technique, classes are tailored to help each participant achieve their personal athletic goals, regardless of their primary sport.  Through the American Development Model, as viewed by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, age-appropriate acquisition of fundamental movement patterns apply broadly across youth sports.  Exercises are designed to support coordination, speed and agility, strength and stamina, power and acceleration.  Workouts will include plyometrics, the use of slideboards, and learning to maintain flexibility to reduce the risk of injury.  Participants should bring their own water bottle and yoga mat to each class. The Empty Pockets will kick-off Labor Day weekend with live music guaranteed to get you dancing, followed by a spectacular fireworks show at 9 pm. Throughout the evening, food and drinks will be available for purchase from Little Louies, Fat Shallot, Big Mama’s Kitchen, La Humita on Wheels, and Ravinia Brewery. This free, outdoor event is open to all. 

Please note: Glencoe Beach will be closed on September 3 to safely prepare for the fireworks show.

  • Face Masks
    While face coverings are not required outdoors, masks are strongly encouraged in crowded outdoor settings. 
  • Parking
    Parking will not be available around Lakefront Park (Longwood, Park, and Hazel Avenues). We recommend parking at the Village of Glencoe commuter lots and walking to Lakefront Park. If you are planning to drop off family members, one-way traffic will be maintained on Beach Road from Longwood to Sheridan Road and on Hawthorn Avenue from Longwood Avenue to Sheridan Road. Drivers can use the following drop-off routes:
    • Entering from Park Avenue: turn north on Longwood Avenue and west on Beach Road to exit
    • Entering on Hazel Avenue: turn south on Longwood Avenue and west on Hawthorn Avenue to exit
