Park Perspectives: Greenhouse Revamp
Wednesday, October 9, 2024
The Glencoe Park District is setting its sights on revitalizing its greenhouse facilities. Recently, Carol Spain, President of the Glencoe Park District, and Kyle Kuhs, Director of Parks and Planning, shed light on the current state of these pivotal structures and the plans for their redevelopment.
Greenhouses: A Hub of Community Recreation
According to Carol Spain, the district's greenhouses serve a role in horticulture and community recreation. The District uses the greenhouses to grow oak trees from local acorns and a select range of plants. Kyle Kuhs further delineated the primary usage of these spaces by community members, particularly adults, who view gardening as a favorite recreational activity.
Addressing Aging Infrastructure
Despite their value to the community, the greenhouses face significant challenges. As Carol pointed out, "It looks like these greenhouses are old and perhaps not in the best shape." Kyle confirmed that the structures are approximately 30 years old and suffering from outdated infrastructure. "They do have failing infrastructure related to the ventilation, the plumbing, and electrical systems, and they need major renovations," he elaborated.
Exploring New Opportunities
In response to these concerns, the Board has initiated discussions about building a new greenhouse at a more suitable location. Carol Spain posed the question many are asking: "How would this provide better opportunities for the community?" Kyle Kuhs said the current location in the maintenance yard poses safety risks due to heavy machinery and regular deliveries. A new, publicly accessible location would alleviate these issues, enhancing safety and accessibility for all.
Looking Towards the Future
The plans to rebuild the greenhouse facilities are part of a broader commitment by the Glencoe Park District to protect and improve community spaces without a tax increase. To address high-priority capital facility needs without a tax rate increase, Glencoe Park District has placed a bond referendum on the November 2024 ballot. Improvements are proposed for the greenhouse, Glencoe Beach, parks maintenance facility, and Takiff ball field. To learn more, click here.
