Goats Return to Milton Park for Invasive Species Control
Friday, September 20, 2024
The Glencoe Park District is excited to announce the return of a herd of goats to Milton Park from September 23-27. This initiative, led by the District's Green Team, aims to manage invasive species in the park naturally.
Earlier this year, approximately 30 goats grazed in the park, effectively removing understory vegetation, including non-native and invasive species such as buckthorn. This method offers an eco-friendly alternative to chemical herbicides and manual labor.
The goats' return visit is crucial, as invasive plants are difficult to eradicate. Sustained grazing from the goats damages invasive plant species' health, facilitating the growth of native and beneficial plants and enhancing the local wildlife habitat.
Visitors are welcome to observe the goats but are advised not to touch or feed them. Additionally, dogs should be kept at home to avoid frightening the goats.
