Improvements to Traffic Flow, Parking Management, and Pedestrian Safety in the Glencoe Beach and Lakefront Park Area

Tuesday, April 14, 2026

Following feedback from residents, the Glencoe Park District and Village of Glencoe are planning a series of coordinated changes to improve traffic flow, parking management, and pedestrian safety in the Glencoe Beach and Lakefront Park area ahead of the upcoming 2026 beach season, effective May 23.

Glencoe Beach Operational Changes

Glencoe Beach will now be staffed until 8:00 p.m. (extended from 7:00 p.m.). Admission fees will be required until 8 p.m. Beach operating dates and hours:

Dates Hours
Preseason May 23-25, 30-31 10 AM-8 PM
Regular Season June 6-August 16 10 AM-8 PM
Post Season

August 17-September 7*

*Lifeguards are only on duty on weekends

10 AM-8 PM
  • Lakefront Park is open from dawn to dusk. Street parking around Lakefront Park is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Portable restroom service has been increased to three days per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday), with flexibility to add additional service if needed.
  • Litter removal increased to seven days per week.
  • Lakefront Park garbage collection increased to Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with flexibility to add additional collection as needed.
  • Daily restroom cleaning will take place during operating hours.

Parking Management and Traffic Flow

  • Designated parallel parking spaces will be striped to clearly indicate where parking is permitted on Longwood Avenue, Hazel Avenue, and Beach Road to simplify parking and improve enforcement. This will also ensure that refuge areas are clearly delineated to ensure safe traffic flow.
  • New parking signs will be placed on Longwood Avenue, Hazel Avenue, and Beach Road with updated language: "Parking In Designated Spaces Only, Fines Double."
  • Signage will be added to the street ends of Park Avenue and Hazel Avenue to encourage overflow parking at the Metra commuter parking lots.
  • Signage at Metra commuter parking lots will be improved to clarify that beach parking is permitted in those locations.
  • New pavement markings, stop signs/stop bars at the halfway house, and additional pedestrian signage will be installed along beach access ramps to improve safety.

Ordinance Updates and Enforcement

  • Fines increased to $100 for parking violations on Longwood Avenue, Hazel Avenue, Park Avenue, Beach Road, Sheridan Road, and around Lakefront Park. Parking enforcement will be expanded to include dedicated and increased frequency on weekends.
  • The Village Board will consider amendments to ? 23-84 in April to formally establish parallel parking requirements and designated space rules.

Looking Ahead: Major Beach Renovations

Starting September 8, 2026, Glencoe Beach will be closed for construction to update the playground, sun shelters, trellis, beach house, boardwalk, boat storage, and more. For safety reasons, no one will be allowed on the swimming beach during the construction period. However, portions of the beach access ramps will remain accessible for walkers and runners. This project is expected to be completed in May 2027, just in time for the summer season.
