Glencoe Park District Wins National Gold Medal Award

Wednesday, September 30, 2026

The Glencoe Park District is proud to announce it has been awarded the National Gold Medal Award, the highest honor in the park and recreation profession. The 2026 award adds to a remarkable history of national recognition for the District, which previously won the Gold Medal in 2019 and was named a national finalist in 2017, 2018, and 2025.

Presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the Gold Medal Award recognizes park and recreation agencies that demonstrate excellence in community service, innovation, sustainability, fiscal responsibility, and quality of life.

The Glencoe Park District competed in Class V, which includes communities with populations under 30,000. After being named one of four national finalists, the District emerged as the 2026 Gold Medal winner, recognizing its exceptional programs, strategic planning, fiscal management, accessible offerings, and strong community support.

"This award is an incredible honor and a reflection of the dedication of our entire team, our Board of Commissioners, and the Glencoe community," said Lisa Sheppard, Executive Director of the Glencoe Park District.

The Gold Medal Awards program, established in 1965, evaluates agencies on initiatives including community engagement, environmental stewardship, long-term planning, professional development, programming, and fiscal responsibility. The rigorous national competition is judged by independent park and recreation professionals from across the country.

"This history of recognition is a tremendous testament to the consistency and quality of the work happening throughout the Glencoe Park District," Sheppard said. "While we are celebrating this award today, we also recognize that excellence is an ongoing commitment. We are proud of what we have accomplished together and excited about what comes next."

The Glencoe community is invited to celebrate on Friday, October 2, following the Great Mud Run. From 5-8 p.m., enjoy a festive street celebration featuring live music, BBQ, beer, and an evening of community fun as we celebrate this incredible achievement together.
